Prediction of seed-yield potential of common bean populations Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Santos,João Bosco dos.
Earliest possible prediction of seed-yield potential of autogamous crop populations increases breeding program efficiency by saving time and resources. Alternatives for obtaining seed-yield predictions were compared by evaluating four common-bean populations in F1 and F2 generations together with the parents. Mean components (m + a' and d) and variances were estimated. The potential of each population was predicted by using both these and the Jinks and Pooni (1976) procedure, which allows probability estimation of each population of originating lines surpassing a determined standard. Estimate efficiency was determined by evaluating performances of 62 F5:7 families from each population. Mean component m + a' estimates obtained for the F1 and F2 generations...

Genetic selection Pinus greggii progeny to the establishment of seed orchards PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Aguiar, Ananda Virgínia de; Sousa, Valderês Aparecida de; Shimizu, Jarbas Yukio.
The main deterrent to the adoption of new species for operational plantations is the availability of  genetically improved seeds in sufficient amount to supply the  market. Therefore, this study was carried out with the objective to estimate genetic parameters for individual selection as a basis to transform the field trial into a seedling seed orchard. The trial contained forty seven half-sib families from five Mexican provenances, including northern and central Mexico sources. These were planted at Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, in arandomized complete block design with nine  replications of five-tree linear plots in a 3 m x 3 m spacing. Height, dbh (diameter at breast height) and stem form were assessed in thirteen-year old tree. Variance...

Phenotypic recurrent selection in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) with carioca-type grains for resistance to the fungi Phaeoisariopsis griseola Genet. Mol. Biol.
Amaro,Geovani Bernardo; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Silva,Flávia Barbosa.
The efficiency of recurrent selection was assessed in obtaining common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) plant lines resistant to the phytopathogenic fungi Phaeoisariopsis griseola. The base bean population was obtained from the partial diallel between seven lines with carioca-type grains and 10 sources of resistance to P. griseola. The plants most resistant to the pathogen were selected in the F2 (S0) generation of the populations (C-0). The best S0:1 plants that presented carioca-type grains were intercrossed to obtain cycle I (C-I). The same procedure was adopted to obtain cycles C-II to C-V. In each recurrent selection cycle, S0:1 progenies selected were also assessed in experiments carried out in Lavras, Brazil, always using as check the Carioca MG...

Genetic variation and correlation of agronomic traits in meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehm) clones Ciência Rural
Araújo,Marcelo Renato Alves de; Coulman,Bruce.
Meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehm.) is a recently introduced pasture grass in western Canada. Its leafy production and rapid regrowth have made it a major grass species for pasturing beef animals in this region. As relatively little breeding work has been done on this species, there is little information on its breeding behaviour. The main objective of this study was to estimate total genetic variability, broad-sense heritability, phenotypic and genetic correlations. Forty-four meadow bromegrass clones were evaluated for agronomic characters. Genetic variation for dry matter yield, seed yield, fertility index, harvest index, plant height, plant spread, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, was significant. Broad-sense...

The role of quantitative genetic studies in animal physiological ecology RChHN
Artacho,Paulina; Castañeda,Luis E.; Nespolo,Roberto F..
Evolutionary physiology is a new discipline with roots in comparative physiology. One major change in the emergence of this discipline was an explicit new focus on viewing organisms as the evolutionary products of natural selection. The shift in research emphasis from comparative physiology to evolutionary physiology has resulted in physiological traits becoming important elements in broad research programs of evolution and ecology. Evolutionary quantitative genetics is a theory-based biological discipline that has developed the quantitative tools to test explicit evolutionary hypotheses. The role of quantitative genetics has been paramount, in studying the microevolution of morphology, behavior and life history, but not comparative physiology. As a...

Aspilcueta-Borquis,Rusbel Raúl; Sesana,Roberta Cristina; Berrocal,Milthon Honorio Munoz; Seno,Leonardo de Oliveira; Bignardi,Annaiza Braga; El Faro,Lenira; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de; Camargo,Gregório Miguel Ferreira de; Tonhati,Humberto.
The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for test-day milk, fat and protein yields and 305-day-yields in Murrah buffaloes. 4,757 complete lactations of Murrah buffaloes were analyzed. Co-variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method. The models included additive direct genetic and permanent environmental effects as random effects, and the fixed effects of contemporary group, milking number and age of the cow at calving as linear and quadratic covariables. Contemporary groups were defined by herd-year-month of test for test-day yields and by herd-year-season of calving for 305-day yields. The heritability estimates obtained by two-trait analysis ranged from 0.15 to 0.24 for milk, 0.16 to 0.23 for...

Signature d'expression de gènes, Marqueur prédictif de capacités de survie chez l'huître Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bachere, Evelyne; Degremont, Lionel; Piquemal, David; Roman, Bruno; Noguier, Florian.

Bainy,Adriane Molardi; Savegnago,Rodrigo Pelicioni; Freitas,Luara Afonso de; Nunes,Beatriz do Nascimento; Rosa,Jaqueline Oliveira; Ledur,Mônica Corrêa; Munari,Danísio Prado.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters for bird carcass and meat quality traits, as well as to explore the genetic patterns of the breeding values of this population using cluster analyses. Data from 1,846 birds were used to estimate the genetic parameters of production and quality traits using the multiple-trait animal model, and cluster analyses were performed. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.08± 0.03 for meat pH measured 24 hours after slaughter to 0.85± 0.09 for body weight. The genetic correlations between production traits were high and positive. The genetic correlations between meat quality traits were low and were not informative due to the high standard errors (same magnitudes as those of the genetic...

Effect of lactation length adjustment procedures on genetic parameter estimates for buffalo milk yield Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baldi,Fernando; Laureano,Monyka Marianna Massolini; Gordo,Daniel Gustavo Mansan; Bignardi,Annaiza Braga; Borquis,Rusbel Raul Aspilcueta; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de; Tonhati,Humberto.
The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters for milk yield unadjusted and adjusted for days in milk and, subsequently, to assess the influence of adjusting for days in milk on sire rank. Complete lactations from 90 or 150 days of lactation to 270 or 350 days in milk were considered in these analyses. Milk yield was adjusted for days in milk by multiplicative correction factors, or by including lactation length as a covariable in the model. Milk yields adjusted by different procedures were considered as different traits. Heritability estimates varied from 0.17 to 0.28. Genetic correlation estimates between milk yields unadjusted and adjusted for days in milk were greater than 0.82. Adjusting for days in milk affected the parameter...

Allele frequency and selection efficiency in cross populations of Andean x Mesoamerican common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. Fabales, Fabaceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baldoni,Aisy B.; Ramalho,Magno A. Patto; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima B..
Strategies were investigated for improving efficiency in the use of segregating common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) populations using crosses between the Andean cultivar BRS-Radiante and the Mesoamerican parent cultivar Carioca-MG by developing populations with 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 87.5% of the allele frequency of one of the parents. For each of the five populations we evaluated for two traits, the number of days to the beginning of flowering and grain yield (g plot-1), in the F2:3 (sown in February 2006) and F2:4 (sown in July 2006) generation progenies using 15 x 15 lattice design experiments, with 44 progenies (n = 220 plants) plus the two parents and three controls being evaluated for each generation. In terms of variability release, the populations...

Estimation of variance components, genetic parameters and genetic trends for litter size of swines R. Bras. Zootec.
Barbosa,Leandro; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Regazzi,Adair José; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Santana Júnior,Mário Luiz; Veroneze,Renata.
Records of Large White breed animals were used to estimate variance components, genetic parameters and trends for the character total number of born piglets (TNBP) as measure of litter size. For obtaining variance components and genetic parameters, it was used the Restricted Maximum Likelihood Method using MTDFREML software. Two mixed models (additive and repeatability) were evaluated. The additive model contained fixed effect of the contemporary group and the following random effects: direct additive genetic and residual effect for the first parturition. Repeatability model had the same effects of the additive model plus parturition order fixed effect and non-correlated animal permanent environment random effect for the second, third and forth...

What is the heritable component of spinal deformities in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)? ArchiMer
Bardon, Agnes; Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont-nivet, Mathilde; Chavanne, Herve; Haffray, Pierrick; Vergnet, Alain; Chatain, Beatrice.
Malformations in farmed fish are a prime research topic as it has a major impact on fish welfare and on the economical value of the product. In this study, the genetic component of spine deformities was estimated in European sea bass, a major species of Mediterranean aquaculture, with the use of a posteriori reconstruction of pedigree with microsatellites. Our population exhibited a very high malformation rate (81%),probably due to intense swimming of fish during pre-growing The heritability of global spine deformities was evaluated to be 0.21 +/- 0.04 on the underlying scale (033 +/- 0.06 for lordosis, 0.13 +/- 0.04 for scoliosis). Deformities scored by an internal or external examination turned out to be genetically the same trait (genetic...

Brachiaria brizantha Stapf access evaluation and estimates of genetic parameters for agronomical characters - DOI: 10.4025/actasciagron.v31i1.6605 Agronomy
Basso, Kelen Cristina; UEM; Resende, Rosangela Maria Simeão; EMBRAPA; Valle, Cacilda Borges do; EMBRAPA; Gonçalves, Manoel Carlos; UFGD; Lempp, Beatriz; UFGD.
Currently, Brachiaria brizantha Stapf is the tropical grass with the largest cultivated area in Brazil, being responsible for a major part of the seed market and for the increase in animal production. There are several superior genotypes available in germplasm banks, collected from the African continent and in need of evaluation. The selection of these genotypes must be based on predicted genotype values of the individuals in function of being perennial plants and of unsexed propagation. The standard procedure for the prediction of genetic values is the individual BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Predictor), using estimates of variance components achieved by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) on an individual model. With the aim of selecting B. brizantha...

ABSTRACT The Capsicum genus is widely studied in many countries but most of research focuses on C. annuum. Although its importance as potential genetic resource for breeding to disease resistance and fruit quality, studies on genetics and breeding in C. baccatum var. pendulum are still scarce and it still remains as an underexploited crop. This paper aimed to study the inheritance of agronomic characteristics, to estimate the genetic parameters for seven agronomic traits in C. baccatum var. pendulum, using generation mean analysis and to verify the existence of major genes and polygenes with additive and non-additive effects, using the method of maximum likelihood with the aid of Monogen software. The agronomic traits evaluated were: number of fruits per...

Bernardo,Karla Annielle da Silva; Freire Filho,Francisco Rodrigues; Ribeiro,Valdenir Queiroz; Vieira,Paulo Fernando de Melo Jorge; Lopes,Ângela Celis de Almeida; Oliveira,Rosana Mendes de Moura.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to obtain cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) progenies with compound inflorescences, short peduncles, early cycle, good plant architecture, and high-yielding potential. The initial genetic material consisted of 453 F2:3 progenies, selected from ten crosses and evaluated using Federer’s augmented block design, with two controls. Of these, 60 progenies from the F4:5 and F4:6 generations were selected and assessed in two consecutive experiments, both in a 8x8 lattice design with four controls and four replicates. Early selection was efficient at fixing the evaluated traits. A wide genetic variability was detected among and within progenies.
